Dude, where’s my bandwidth?

OK, what’s the deal here. This is not a drill. All of a sudden, my wireless connection at home, like, sucks. Blazing download speeds of 100 Kbps have been witnessed. Huh?

My wired PC still sees speeds close to 3,000 KBps on downloads, and my wireless laptop actually uploads faster than downloads. What in blazes is going on?

Hmmm.

Do you have a 2.4GHz wireless phone in use? Or a microwave oven?

Hi Paul,

We do have a microwave, but not a 2.4 GHz phone. And the microwave is in use nowhere near as much as my computer (as you can rightly imagine). Regardless, this slowdown just cropped up over the last week or so. We live in a condo, so perhaps my neighbor got a new devide that’s causing interference.

Free things I can try are:

1. Take the usb 802.1b wlan adapter off my TiVo ant try it on my Windws PC (it doesn’t seem to be supported on OSX). That could narrow the problem to my Mac at least.

2. Connect my Mac by wire to the router; that could narrow it down to the airport card itself.

Since everything else on this laptop seems to be breaking, I wouldn’t be surprised. I have three weeks remaining on my AppleCare warranty, but all of the problems I’m having (except for this low bandwidth) are not reliably repeatable, so I’m afraid sending it in will be a total waste of time.

It’s been three years, maybe it’s time to visit Smalldog or the Apple Store…
